Pujols shuts media up

It’s probably not going to be a very fun job covering the Cardinals in any capacity early on this MLB season. Check that: it’s probably not going to be a very fun job covering Albert Pujols in any capacity early on this MLB season.

After all, Pujols has now been linked to steroids inaccurately by the media twice: once by Deadspin in regards to the Grimsley Affidavit, and a second time in December when he appeared as one of the names on that fake list that circulated around the Web like wildfire the morning before the Mitchell Report dropped. Credible news outlets were reporting that inaccurate list too. And well, one of those stations was at a Cardinals news conference today and Pujols asked for them to go to the corner and think about what they’ve done.Pujols asked Cardinals media relations director Brian Bartow to make a reporter and cameraman from St. Louis Fox affiliate KTVI leave the room where Pujols’ news conference was taking place on the final day of the Cardinals’ winter warmup.

“I know we’re in the dark clouds with the steroids,” Pujols said. “But now people are going to second-guess my numbers because some guys started something that wasn’t the truth.”

The KTVI duo watched Monday’s news conference from the corner of the room with the camera off and did not participate.

The incorrect broadcast, Pujols told reporters, showed “50 percent of the things you guys write is not true, and I’m glad that happened.”

Can’t say I blame Pujols for this move; he certainly wants media members to know he’s not one to forgive and forget as far as his reputation is concerned. But we all know the line athlete’s most toe. If Pujols keeps this kind of stuff up and extends it to other outlets (which again, I don’t disagree with in the least), essentially cutting himself off from all access, that same media might turn on him. Tread lightly, bud.
