Albert’s season through 62 games

We all know about the success the St. Louis Cardinals are having to start the 2008 season. The Cardinals sit in second place in the competitive National League Central, with a current record of 36-26, .581 win percentage. That record places them 3.5 games behind the Cubs, who are playing .639 baseball, right now with a clip of 39-22. The Cardinals are tied with the Phillies for the second best record in the National League, and trail only Boston and Anaheim in the AL, and have an even record with Tampa Bay. With 100 games to go, if the playoffs started today, the Cardinals would be the NL wildcard representative, leading that race by 2.5 games over the Florida Marlins.  The Brewers sit three back of the Cardinals, and the Astros are 4.5 back.

Albert Pujols is having yet another MVP type season. Is he the MVP? Maybe, maybe not. Here are his numbers and how they compare to the rest of the NL.

  • 61 games
  • 76-209
  • .364 batting average(3rd in NL)
  • 39 runs(t-18th in NL)
  • 76 hits(4th in NL)
  • 15 doubles
  • 15 homeruns(t-6th in NL)
  • 40 rbi’s(t-14th in NL)
  • 47 walks(3rd in NL)
  • 21 strikeouts
  • .485 OBP(2nd in NL)
  • .651 SLG(5th in NL)
  • 1.135 OPS(3rd in NL)

Albert raises batting average, scores a run, doesn’t strike out, Cardinals win.

Albert Pujols got two more hits on Friday, scored his 98th run of the season, and helped the Cardinals win 6-1 over the Pirates, for their third straight win.

98 runs now scored for Albert. Two away from his 7th straight season with 100 runs scored, with 2 games to go, today and tomorrow against Pittsburgh.

Also, Albert did not strike out, which makes it 102 straight plate appearances without striking out, which is the longest active streak in Baseball. Albert has not struck out in September.

Albert is now batting .328!

Pujols’ presence felt.

According to STLToday:

Manager Tony La Russa said after Tuesday’s loss that Albert Pujols’ cautious running on the base paths may have cost the Cardinals two runs in the game. But the presence of Pujols in the lineup more than counterbalances, the manager said. Pujols, limited by a calf muscle strain, was in the starting lineup again Wednesday and hit a solo home run for his 100th RBI of the season. He continues to restrain his play to avoid aggravating an injury that kept him out of most of the last home stand of the season.

Pujols reached base three times Tuesday but could not score on a potential sacrifice fly, and he stopped from making the turn home from second on a base hit. On Wednesday, he scored from first on Ryan Ludwick’s third-inning double for his 95th run of the season.

“He gives us a chance to score more (being in the lineup),” La Russa said. “That’s something you give up. He’s not going to be able to run very much.”

Pujols against the Cubs

 St. Louis Cardinalsvs. Chicago Cubs

We here at www.albertpujolsclub.com are highlighting Albert Pujols season and career numbers against each team on the Cardinals 2007 schedule. We have arrived at the 7th series of the year, April 20-22. This series against the Cardinals lifelong rival- the Chicago Cubs. This series- in historic Wrigley Field. Check them out. Enjoy:

2006 v. Cubs:

18 games
14-68, .206 batting average
9 runs
2 doubles
0 triples
2 homeruns
13 rbi's
8 walks
13 strikeouts
Albert's struggles against the Cubs were well documented during the 2006 season. The Cub fans loved to chit chat about how the Cubs owned Albert and the Cardinals. They did win the season series against the Cardinals, but, who got the last laugh in the World Series. So what, Albert struggles against the Cubs. Won't happen in 07!

2006 at Wrigley Field

10 games
8-37, .216 batting average
6 runs
1 double
0 triples
1 homerun
7 rbi's
4 walks
7 strikeouts
Albert's .216 batting average is nothing to write home about, and frankly none of these stats in 06 are. His glaring stat is the 4 walks, 7 strikeouts. Definately not Albert like.
Career v. Cubs
98 games
101-359, .281 batting average
63 runs
17 doubles
1 triple
26 homeruns
72 rbi's
49 walks
47 strikeots
Albert's overall stats against the Cubs are definately an improvement over his 2006 numbers. The .281 batting average is well below Albert standards, and actually ranks second lowest among all National League teams. His 49 walks to 47 strikeouts is the key for Albert.

Career at Wrigley Field

51 games
54-197, .274 batting average
30 runs
12 doubles
0 triples
14 homeruns
37 rbi's
22 walks
26 strikeouts
Time for Albert to pick it up at Wrigley during 2007!

Pujols v. the Brewers..

 Milwaukee BrewersSt. Louis Cardinals

During the fourth series of the season the Milwaukee Brewers will pay a trip to Busch Stadium. The Brewers, are a Central division foe who finished fourth during the 2006 season. Here are Albert's numbers against the Brewers.

2006 v. Brewers:

13 games.
18-51, .353 batting average
12 runs
4 doubles
0 triple
5 homeruns
13 rbi's
7 walks
3 strikeouts
Albert had a pretty nice year against the Brewers. The .353 batting average was one of the highest against any N.L teams during the 2006 season. The 12 runs in 13 games is very impressive, which Albert hopes to continue during the 2007 season.

2006 at Busch Stadium:

72 games
92-267, .345 batting average
66 runs
20 doubles
0 triples
24 homeruns
70 rbi's
50 walks
23 strikeouts
Pujols thinks "there is no place like home."

Career v. Brewers:

94 games
117-342, .342 batting average
79 runs
34 doubles
1 triple
21 homeruns

Pujols, like most NL Central foes has had great success against the Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff.

Albert’s numbers against the Astros

Houston Astros vs. St. Louis Cardinals

During the second series of the year, the Cardinals will travel to Houston to face their big rival, the Houston Astros. Here are Albert's 2006 numbers against the Astros, 2006 numbers at Minute Maid, his career numbers against the Astros and his career numbers at Minute Maid.

2006 v. Astros:

16 games.
18-58, .310
10 runs
2 doubles
1 triple
3 homeruns
11 rbi's
14 walks
8 strikeouts
Albert had a pretty impressive 2006 season against the Astros. His .310 batting average is a little lower than his season average, but the 10 runs in 16 games is pretty good, along with his 11 rbi's. How about that walk to strikeout ratio. 14-8, can anyone beat that?

2006 at Minute Maid Park:

10 games
12-39, .308 batting average
6 runs
0 doubles
1 triple
2 homeruns
5 rbi's
6 walks
4 strikeouts
Pujols has always had good success at Minute Maid. As you will see, hos .308 in 2006 is actually lower than his career at MMP, but regardless he had a nice year there. Again, more walks than strikeouts.

Career v. Astros:

102 games
122-383, .319 batting average
72 runs
19 doubles
1 triple
25 homeruns
60 rbi's
59 walks
48 strikeouts
Albert Pujols in his career has enjoyed hitting the Astros pitching. .319 career batting average, which still rates lower than his overall career batting average. His 25 homeruns, 60 rbi's is impressive, and once again, what a great walk to strikeout ratio.

Career at Minute Maid Park:

53 games.
68-205, .332 batting average
40 runs
8 doubles.
1 triple
16 homeruns
32 rbi's
26 walks
30 strikeouts
Minute Maid park has been good to Albert Pujols in his career. In the 53 games, the .332 batting average is extremely impressive, along with 16 homeruns and 32 rbi's, and for the fourth time, less walks than strikeouts. Nice.
Official www.albertpujolsclub.com prediction: Albert continues his dominace of the Astros and Minute Maid Park, and has a nice weekend series. 2 homeruns, 6 rbi's is our guess.
